Organising Your packing Materials

In order to enjoy a successful move, you will need to gather together some key items.  With these items, your move will go smoothly and your items will remain properly protected and secure.

If you are using the services of a moving company, you may have to obtain boxes directly from the company.  This way, they can be certain the boxes are of the optimum dimension and are sturdy enough to hold your packed items.  Even if you are not required to use the company’s boxes or if you are hauling your items yourself, you still might want to consider purchasing these boxes.  Typically, they are not very expensive and they can make the process a whole lot easier.

If you don’t want to get your boxes from a moving company, you might also be able to obtain boxes from some of your local stores.  There items are generally shipped to them in medium to large boxes that can easily be used for packing for a move.  The boxes used to store copy machine paper are also great for moving, as they are easy to stack and are durable.  They are particularly useful for packing heavier items.

Packing Tape
Packing tape is essential, as it helps you secure the tops of the boxes and prevent items from falling out.  You should get enough tape to completely seal the top flaps on your boxes.  The convenience of having a tape dispenser may also be worth the extra cost, as it makes it much easier to apply the tape and to tear it off where needed.  If several of you will be packing, you might want to consider getting more than one dispenser. Or, purchase packing tape with a built-in dispenser.  If you don’t get a dispenser, you will need to have scissors on hand to cut your tape.

Garbage Bags
Obviously, you will need bags to throw away items that you decide to toss out rather than move with you.  Garbage bags also come in handy for packing items you will be keeping, particularly those that won’t fit in a box.  It is best to use garbage bags that you can see through.  This way, you won’t have to reopen them in order to confirm if they are holding garbage or items you are keeping.  Also, make sure they are strong so they don’t break during transport.

Colored Markers and Ribbons
In order to make the moving process easier, it is a good idea to color code your boxes and garbage bags.  In other words, all of the items that belong in your bedroom may be color coded with red while items meant for your son’s room will be coded in blue.  After packing and sealing the box, you can use the colored markers to mark the box with the appropriate color.  When it comes to your garbage bags, tying the appropriately colored ribbon to the handle of bag will help you keep track of where they belong.

Packing Material
Packing material is also needed to help you keep your fragile items protected.  Newsprint, which is newspaper without the print, is good for packing between dishes and around other breakable items.  By using newsprint rather than inked newspaper, you can keep your items and hands free from the ink that rubs off so easily.
